The USDA NASS has provided an update on the 2024 U.S. sugarbeet crop planting in its weekly crop progress report (https://www.nass.usda.gov/) from last week. Here’s a sample of what the latest report showed. Planting hasn’t started in some states so there is no report yet.

Colorado – Growers in Colorado have started planting with 18 percent of beets planted, up from 7 percent a week ago. And that’s well above the 4 percent five-year average.

Wyoming – Wyoming has, according to NASS reports, planted 19 percent of its beet crop thus far this year. The five-year average stands at 4 percent.

Michigan - Growers in the state have started planting with 14 percent of the beets in the ground, which is behind last year’s 28 percent as well as behind the five-year average of 21 percent.

Minnesota – The 2024 crop is 2 percent planted.

Idaho – Compared to a year ago, Idaho growers are not able to plant at the same pace. Planting stood at 16 percent at the time of the report, slightly above 12 percent a week ago. However, compared to last year, planting is behind. A year ago it was 29 percent with the five-year average at 43 percent.

Oregon – Across the border in Oregon, 90 percent of the sugarbeet crop has been planted, up from last week’s 75 percent. Last year at this time, 41 percent of Oregon’s beets had been planted with the five-year average at 63 percent. The NASS also reports that 20 percent of the sugarbeets have emerged thus far.
