Major farm groups say the farm bill is the place to debate farm program funding, not the annual budget process.
The National Corn Growers Association says targeting the federal crop insurance program is extremely shortsighted of the Trump administration which has proposed cutting the program by 36 percent or $28.5 billion over the next decade.
They say corn farmers believe crop insurance is the most important risk management tool and are urging Congress to honor their commitments made to the nation’s rural communities when the 2014 farm bill was reauthorized.
American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall says the 2018 budget fails to recognize agriculture’s current financial challenges.
He says the proposal ignores the industry’s voluntary contributions to reduce the federal deficit and would negatively impact economic growth.
