Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi has urged people to reduce their intake of sugary drinks.

His comment comes after the Department of Health introduced a tax policy that serves as a strategic plan against non-communicable diseases.

National Treasury is planning to hold a stakeholder workshop in November to discuss the proposed tax on sugar sweetened beverages.

Motsoaledi says, "We started with sugary drinks, specifically because they present more problems than the others. They tell you in a can of a sugar sweeten beverage there are about 10 teaspoon of sugar for instance."

"Ordinarily people don't know about that when they take it, they don't have that information. It's our duty to control that they inform them. But secondly, it has got no nutritional value in it all together and so why do we allow it to destroy the world," he adds.
