FAIRVIEW, Mont.—Producers in the Yellowstone River Valley on the border of northeast Montana/northwest North Dakota are very busy right now as sugarbeet harvest is just around the corner. Other producers are busy in the fields chopping corn for silage.

“Growers are putting the final irrigation to the sandy and lighter soil fields, and closing all irrigation ditches to make final preparations for the upcoming beet harvest,” said Jeff Bieber, who farms with his wife, Jessica, son, Justin and daughter, Jenna.

Corn silage harvest is in full swing and growers are trying to complete prepping their equipment for beet harvest.

The forecast is also for soaking rains predicted to start this Wednesday (Sept. 21).

“Growers welcome any and all rain, but if there is a time when beet growers really don’t want a soaker – it is at the end of September,” Jeff said. “It just makes everything all just a little more hectic.”

A dry harvest is ideal not only for beet growers but also for the processor. While wet fields are problematic, they can be dealt with.
