Buena farmer, John Formisano Sr., supplied beets for a new craft beer made by the Cape May Brewing Company.

The 79-year-old farmer was approached by state Secretary of Agriculture Douglas Fisher with the proposition, according to the Daily Journal.

Cape May Brewing Company was working on a new certified Jersey Fresh beer starring red and golden beets, and Fisher pegged Formisano Farms as a perfect partner for the project.

Formisano told the Daily Journal that it wasn't his idea, but he sent 10 boxes of holden and eight or nine boxes of red beets over for the company to use.

The inspiration for the beer, named Beets By May, came from Ben Menk, general manager of The Farm & Fisherman Tavern on Route 70 in Cherry Hill.
