This image frames a 1-pound bag of sugar. For many young people measuring it creates a pretty scary picture.

“You know.” Briana Thornton said. “I didn’t expect all the sugar to, like, you know, be there. I thought it’d be cool to be ahead of everyone else. Once I started, I noticed I was completely wrong.”

After drinking “one little container” of a commercial iced-tea brand, the Stockton teenager’s thirst for scientific inquiry was quenched. Quickly.

“It was an eye-opener,” said Thornton, 16, a senior-to-be at the Bianchi campus of one.Charter Academy of Visual and Performing Arts. “Every whole can had 18 teaspoons of sugar. It was very shocking. ‘Wow.’ I set it down. ‘Oh, cool, I’m done with that.’ It was a fun experience, though.”

It was conceived by Tama Brisbane, 58, Stockton’s inaugural poet laureate and co-founder of With Our Words, an 11-year-old slam-poetry group.

Brisbane gave WOW students 1-pound bags of refined sugar and plastic containers. For every gram of sugar consumed—mostly in soft drinks—1 teaspoon of sugar would be poured into the bowl. The outcome isn’t complete yet.
