Sen. Jeff Merkley, an Oregon Democrat, introduced a bill that would mandate GMO labeling.

The bill, Politico reports, requires food makers to disclose the presence of GMO ingredients on the Nutrition Facts labels.

Merkley’s alternative bill would give manufacturers four labeling options, ranging from using a parenthesis following the relevant ingredient to using a symbol developed by the FDA in consultation with food manufacturers.

None of the options would require front panel disclosures or warning statements.

The bill comes just a day after the Senate Agriculture Committee sent a bill on to the full Senate that would make GMO labeling voluntary.

The bill is co-sponsored by Senate Democrats Patrick Leahy of Vermont and Jon Tester of Montana.
