Two people were killed late Monday night when a pickup truck collided head-on with a semi hauling sugarbeets near Felton, Minn.

The occupants of the 2002 Dodge Dakota pickup, whose identities have not yet been released, died at the scene after the southbound pickup crossed the centerline of Minn. Highway 9, north of Felton in Clay County and struck the northbound sugarbeet truck, at 11:13 p.m., the Minnesota State Patrol said in a news release.

Both victims, a 33-year-old man and a 23-year-old man, are from Borup, Minn., according to the report.

The sugarbeet truck, a 1994 International 9200 Tandem, was operated by Patrick Moran 55, Waubun, Minn. He was transported by ambulance to Essentia Health in Fargo for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, the State Patrol said.

"This is probably one of the worst crashes I've seen in my 18 years of law enforcement," Sgt. Mark Empting, Clay County Sheriff's Office, told Forum News Service. "You have to share the road with everybody. Everybody needs to be cautious around the beet trucks, they're a little bit bigger than the normal cars. Just take your precaution and be sure you're paying attention to your surroundings."

Officials have not yet determined a cause of the crash. Alcohol was not detected at the scene, the State Patrol said.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Department and Felton Fire Department assisted at the scene.
