PAVILLION, Wyo.—This year’s Fremont County sugarbeet crop was a good one, according to Wyoming Sugar Company’s Agricultural Administrator Myron Casdorph.

“The sugar content was up about two points, to 17.5 percent, which is great,” he said. “The yield per acre averaged 23 tons per acre, which is down just a bit.”

Casdorph said the early spring moisture made a difference with the yields.

“With our wet spring it was tough to get them in early, so we didn’t have as many growing days as last year,” he said. Conversely, last year’s harvest was plagued by wet weather and equipment breakdowns in the field, which didn’t happen this year. “We had great harvesting weather. It was a good crop and they are processing well in Worland,” he said.

Wyoming Sugar Company is a grower-owned with a sugar refinery in Worland that produces sugar, molasses and a beet pulp animal feed.

Fremont County has 10 growers who planted 1,400 acres of sugarbeets this year. The value of the sugarbeet crop is annually around $1.5 million dollars.
