A new federal microloan program seeks to help small and family operations, as well as novice and socially disadvantaged farmers.

Administered by the USDA's Farm Service Agency, the program will offer various loan and payback options of up to $35,000 and is designed especially to help new producers through the often costly start-up years. The loans can be used to purchase land, livestock, equipment, feed, seed and supplies, or to construct buildings and/or make farm improvements.
