On June 26, 2009, the House of Representatives passed the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 (H.R. 2454) in a tight 217-205 vote. The energy and climate change bill would cap carbon emissions and create new renewable energy standards.

The bill's agriculture provisions negotiated by Chairman Peterson had the support of many agriculture, conservation and forestry organizations.

Although many ag industry groups supported the measure, a few were less than optimistic about some of the bill's impacts on agriculture and energy. Several groups have issued their own statements regarding the passed legislation.
