The USDA is taking public comments on bioengineered crops and food labeling.

The agency’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) has posted 30 questions to its website as it prepares to write proposed rules on how food makers will need to comply with the federal GMO labeling law.

One of the questions is what terms should be interchangeable with bioengineering?

Another is how much of a bioengineered substance should a product contained for it to be labeled as such?

Congress passed the GMO labeling law a year ago and the USDA has one more year to finalize the regulation. The proposed rule is expected at the end of this year or early next year.
