Spam turned 80 years old Wednesday.

The canned Hormel pork product is consumed at the rate of almost 13 cans every second, according to the company website. Spam played a significant role in World War II, with more than 100 million pounds shipped overseas to feed allied soldiers.

The name is thought to be derived from the words Spiced Ham, but there are many alternate theories. The website says only a handful of former Hormel executives know for sure.

There are now 15 varieties of Spam, ranging from jalapeño to teriyaki.
