A Colorado State University grad has literal big plans for the abandoned and oft-trespassed sugar factory on Longmont city limits, but they aren't likely to happen soon.

Kyra Czerwinski, 22, just graduated with a bachelor's of science degree in landscape architecture from the university, and her senior capstone project was to redesign the former Great Western Sugar Company's factory.

Czerwinski's lofty master plan for the abandoned factory garnered an A from her professors, but are not practically feasible right now. She agreed that the sugar factory master plan was a little bit like a concept car — fun to think about.

"I have no idea of the cost of something like this. It for sure would be very expensive, but it's more like 'Look how cool this would be but don't ask too many questions,'" Czerwinski said, smiling.

Czerwinski's plans include revitalizing the site plagued by lime deposits and asbestos-laden buildings into a green space with winding bike paths, a beer garden, residential and commercial development, an open marketplace and other features.

Czerwinski did GIS surveying of the site and received quarterly feedback from her professors to complete the project.

Czerwinski was not able to reach property owner, Dick Thomas, but she did talk to Longmont Redevelopment Manager David Starnes and Longmont Museum Curator of Research Erik Mason about the site.
