Diet soda health hazard?

It works as a great toilet cleaner, rust remover, insect repellant, battery cleaner, and paint and odor remover — but do you really want it passing through your stomach?

Diet cola, as thirst-quenching as it may be, is not really a healthy beverage choice. It may seem like a better choice than a sugary soft drink by saving about 140-plus calories.

But there is more to this “chemical cocktail” than meets the lips and throat — such as artificial sweeteners like aspartame, saccharin and sucralose.

Artificial sweeteners have more intense flavor than real sugar, so over time, they can dull the senses to naturally sweet foods like fruit. Artificial sweeteners trigger insulin, which sends your body into fat storage mode and leads to weight gain.

Diet soda is calorie-free, but it won’t necessarily help you lose weight. According to health.com, researchers from the University of Texas found that over the course of about 10 years, diet soda drinkers had a 70 percent greater increase in waist circumference compared with non-drinkers.
