Moorhead-based American Crystal Sugar Co. is teaming with United Sugars Corp., a sugar marketing company partly owned by American Crystal, in building a $40 million bulk sugar storage and transfer facility in Montgomery, Ill., about 45 miles west of Chicago.

The project is being built and financed by American Crystal and will be operated by United Sugars, which will also manage the sale and distribution of sugar to customers in the area.

The 20-acre facility will have a 26,000-square-foot bulk storage dome, a 17,000-square-foot transfer building and 5,500 feet of track space.

The dome, which will stand 134 feet high, will hold more than 60,000 metric tons of sugar.

The new facility is scheduled to begin operating in late 2016.

"We are proud to build and finance a facility that will provide USC enhanced capabilities to continue to provide customers with the superior level of service they've come to rely on over the years," said David Berg, American Crystal president.

Dirk Swart, executive vice president, industrial sales and marketing for United Sugars, said "customer requirements change frequently and this facility will allow us to quickly and easily respond to their needs."

In addition to American Crystal, the other owners of United Sugars are Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative and the United States Sugar Co. of Clewiston, Fla.
