SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb.—One of the most important harvests in the panhandle is about to begin.

Sugarbeets are one of the most economically important crops in the panhandle mostly due to the Western Sugar Factory in Scottsbluff. Right now, farmers are preparing for the harvest and although it is too warm to store the sugarbeets, you can expect a constant flow of trucks hauling sugarbeets into the winter season.

“During our early harvest we`ll be buying about 300 loads of sugarbeets a day here in Scottsbluff and then once we get into regular harvest we'll load about 1,000 loads of sugarbeets a day starting on Oct. 6,” said Jerry Darnell, Western Sugar`s area ag manager.

So far the sugarbeet harvest looks promising. Western Sugar will begin their early sugarbeet harvest Tuesday.
