Michigan grower recognized as "Champion of Change"

A fifth-generation farmer from Michigan has been recognized as a “Champion of Change” by the White House.

Rita Herford of Huron County is one of 11 young women leaders honored for work in their communities. The 26 year-old farms with her family in Michigan’s Thumb, growing wheat, sugarbeets, dry edible beans, corn and soybeans.

During the event, Valerie Jarrett with the White House said, “She not only farms 4,400 acres of crops, but also works with local institutions to educate consumers about the importance of sustainable farming practices.”

Herford is also part of the GMO Spokeswoman Project with the Michigan Sugar Company, a member of Kellogg’s Origins Great Lakes Wheat Program and a board member of her county farm bureau. The farm is verified by the Michigan Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program.
