SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb.—The 2015 sugarbeet crop was off to a good start until cold weather hit the region on Mother’s Day weekend.

Until that time, emergence was good, there was no crust, and there was good moisture. All that changed late on May 9, and into May 10.

Now, according to Jerry Darnell, Western Sugar Cooperative southern area agriculture manager at Scottsbluff, frost damage to the young beet plants is still being assessed.

The worst damage seems to be around Kimball, and in the Mitchell, Bayard and Box Butte County areas.

“Most seems to be north of the river,” Darnell said. “There will be some replants, but it will be next week before we know the extent of the damage.”
