This year's sugarbeet crop in southern Idaho appears to be a record breaker for yields, says Stacy Camp, agriculture manager at Amalgamated Sugar Co.'s plant in Paul, Idaho.
The sugar content of the crop is also a record breaker.
"I've never seen sugar content this low," says Camp, who's been with the company for 20 years.
Several growers stopped their harvests early to wait for the sugars to build, says Dave Scantlin, agriculture manager at Amalgamated's Twin Falls plant. Eventually, however, they could wait no longer.
"The reality is when you get into mid-October, you don't have the time to wait on sugar production," Scantlin says.
