SESVanderHave develops and delivers competitive sugarbeet varieties in many markets around the world. In the U.S., the company focuses on the needs of growers in each production region. Research and testing are also incorporated to evaluate new genetics to meet the local demands. Now, let’s review each market within the U.S. and highlight opportunities for growers with SESVanderHave.

California

Spreckels Sugar Company growers have seen SV varieties rise to the top of official trials the last few years and are seeing the same results in their fields. SV 602TT provides excellent early sugar and yield and still has sufficient heat tolerance to shine from April through the end of June. SESVanderHave continues to screen all lots produced for California, checking for field emergence, heat tolerance and field vigor, and only selling lots that perform at the highest level.

Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative

Growers have been very happy with the SESVanderHave performance in their fields, which often reflects what they see in the official trial results. SV788 has proven Rhizoctonia tolerance in the official trials, and that trait has carried through for growers.  SV762 is a well-balanced variety with very good Cercospora tolerance and good tolerance to both Aphanomyces and Rhizoctonia. This workhorse variety takes a backseat only to the higher-yielding SV655, which is excellent in both RSA and RST.

Vance Johnson, who grows beets for Minn-Dak Farmers Cooperative in Breckenridge, Minn., has had great success with SV varieties.

Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative

Grower’s face rhizomania, Cercospora, Rhizoctonia and Aphanomyces at very challenging levels in the U.S. Research in the SMBSC growing region has shown consistent performance in these difficult fields with varieties SV863, SV862 and SV894.    Reviewing the extensive data (proprietary trials, OVT trials , strip trials and grower experiences), the foundation of two sources of rhizomania tolerance, very good Cercospora tolerance combined with good Aphanomyces and Rhizoctonia tolerances make these varieties solid contributors to the choices offered the SMBSC growers. Data from SMBSC official trials show SV genetics are very well-adapted to the SMBSC region and are proven stable in many different situations.

American Crystal Sugar Company

These growers also face many challenges, though the severity of diseases varies greatly across the Red River Valley. SESVanderHave analyzes data from proprietary trials, grower strip trials, official variety trials and numerous disease nursery trials to select specific hybrids to meet the challenges growers face. SV375 is a high sugar type with low SLM, and also contains good Cercospora and Aphanomyces tolerance. When Rhizoctonia creates yield challenges, SV265 meets that challenge. It is a highly vigorous hybrid that provides excellent revenue at the end of the season. SV203 has excellent sugar (especially for early harvest), and with a balanced disease package, delivers above-average revenue per acre. Whether it’s rhizomania, Cercospora, root aphid, Rhizoctonia or Aphanomyces, SESVanderHave is committed to delivering quality hybrids for Red River Valley growers.

Amalgamated Sugar Company

Growers in Idaho and eastern Oregon have seen an increase in disease pressure, and SESVanderHave is now selecting hybrids that balance traits such as rhizomania, Rhizoctonia, Cercospora, Aphanomyces and of course curly top. Pairing these disease traits with yield and sugar traits creates stable varieties that are widely adapted for the Idaho grower. SV183N has been well-received by growers in the nematode segment of Amalgamated’s growing region; SV182 is performing very well for growers in non-nematode conditions.

SV099N has proven to be very stable, with great sugar and high yield numbers, and tolerates rhizomania, Rhizoctonia, Aphanomyces, Cercospora, nematode, root aphid and much more. The broad range of genetic diversity has demonstrated SV genetics can perform at a high level and deliver traits to fill the needs of Amalgamated growers.

Western Sugar North

Western Sugar North-approved variety SV1781N has excellent tolerance to curly top, nematode and root aphid, moderate tolerance to Ccercospora, Fusarium and Aphanomyces. It is a well-balanced variety that carries an excellent amount of sugar per acre to round it off. SV1782N adds good Aphanomyces and Cercospora tolerance to the sweet genetic package. SV1794N is new to lineup, with very good sugar per ton along with a balanced disease package. Western Sugar does an excellent job screening hybrids, approving only high-performing hybrids for Western North growers.

Western Sugar South

SV1686N is a sweet, high-yielding hybrid that delivers a balanced disease package of nematode, curly top, Cercospora and root aphid protection. SV1699N is in its third year of testing, showing excellent sugar per ton with a good disease package. SESVanderHave continues improving and strives to provide hybrids that produce for Western South growers.

Wyoming Sugar

1361N is a strong rhizomania and nematode product with moderate Fusarium tolerance and great adaptability to a variety of conditions. SV3303N is a second-year variety with great potential; its high yield ranks fourth in revenue per acre, pending approval.

Lantic Sugar

SV575, strong in Rhizoctonia/rhizomania and has a nice balance in yield and sugar. It carries a lot of the genetics that have brought success to many areas in the U.S., and Alberta growers are excited about its potential there. SV586 is on track for full approval, providing great nematode protection.
