This buyers' guide appears in the April 2021 issue of Sugar Producer.

Planting a sugarbeet crop is a costly investment, and everyone knows you can’t just leave those beets out there to fend for themselves. The products listed here will help growers protect their beets and reduce the sting of weather-related problems.

Always read and follow label instructions. Some products may not be registered for sale or use in all states or counties. Applicators should check with their respective state agencies responsible for pesticide registration to ensure registration status.

Regev Fungicide

Sugar beet growers now have access to a first-of-its-kind hybrid fungicide—Regev. This is the first product to combine the disease control activity of a botanical ingredient (tea tree oil) with a conventional fungicide (difenoconazole). Regev brings a new level of control to two key diseases impacting sugarbeets: Cercospora leaf spot and powdery mildew.

A primary advantage of Regev is that it has two active ingredients but only one residue. One mode of action works by cell membrane disruption (FRAC Group 46), while the other MOA affects sterol biosynthesis in membranes (FRAC Group 3). Having these two distinctly different modes of action provides Regev with its high efficacy against plant diseases.

The natural botanical ingredient in REGEV—tea tree oil—delivers activity on both fungal and bacterial pathogens.

Guarda

Guarda is a liquid bactericide/fungicide that fits perfectly into BioSafe Systems’ line of over 30 sustainable products for agriculture and horticulture crop protection.

Guarda combats plant pathogens and provides continued defense through cellular damage and inhibition of these organisms. It is the first EPA-registered crop protection tool with botanical thyme oil as the active ingredient. Its unique formulation is standardized by its reactive component, thymol, which ensures the antimicrobial qualities of the thyme oil function consistently. The power of Guarda’s active ingredient is strengthened by the unique HOLDit polymer technology, allowing it to remain active over a period of time and providing efficient killing power against pathogenic bacteria and fungi. Without HOLDit, thyme oil is rendered inefficient because the thymol would volatize in the environment, never allowing for sufficient contact time to destroy microorganisms. This minimum-risk, inert HOLDit technology safeguards the thyme oil from degrading over time to release the active ingredient, extending performance on crops without any restrictions or limitations.

Delegate WG Insecticide

Corteva Agriscience has received U.S. EPA and state approvals for Delegate WG insecticide in potatoes and sugarbeets. Labeled insects include Colorado potato beetle, potato psyllid, worms, thrips and leafminer.

Delegate contains the active ingredient spinetoram, a member of IRAC Group 5 (spinosyns). No other class of products — organophosphates, neonicotinoids or pyrethroids — affects the insect nervous system with the same mode of action. Delegate WG is similar in mode of action to Blackhawk insect control, a Corteva Agriscience product and also a member of IRAC Group 5. However, Delegate provides sharper control of insects.

Field trials with Delegate have been conducted on pests such as Colorado potato beetle and potato psyllid.

Delegate can be included in IPM programs that take advantage of beneficial insects. In fact, wide-scale use in other crops has shown Delegate to have low impact on populations of key beneficial insects. Delegate was originally registered under EPA’s Reduced Risk Pesticide Program.

Stinger Herbicide

Stinger herbicide provides superior control of Canada thistle in sugarbeets, wheat, corn and other crops. And, unlike other herbicides, it can significantly reduce thistle populations next season.

Stinger has excellent tank-mix compatibility and is a critical component of micro-rate tank-mixing for broad-spectrum weed control. As a result, it greatly reduces costly hand-weeding expenses.

Midac FC Insecticide

Midac FC insecticide provides convenient control of sugarbeet root maggot. It mixes perfectly with liquid fertilizer and AZteroid FC 3.3 for easy in-furrow application. No heavy boxes or extra equipment are required on the planter.

Like all Vive products, Midac FC contains the Allosperse nano-polymer delivery system, allowing growers to get more done at once during the busy planting season. Ninety-seven percent of growers who used Midac FC in 2020 are planning to use it again in 2021, and 94 percent say they would recommend it to their neighbors.

Provysol Fungicide

Provysol fungicide from BASF is the first and only isopropanol azole on the market, making it a unique disease control and resistance management option for sugarbeet producers. Designed to provide fast-acting and long-lasting disease protection, this new FRAC Group 3 fungicide performs well, even in areas where resistance to older chemistries exists.

The unique properties of Provysol fungicide provide control of Cercospora leaf spot and suppression of powdery mildew, for effective disease control that improves both yield and recoverable sugar potential. It is formulated to quickly penetrate leaves and form reservoirs, where it’s deployed into the plant slowly and effectively. The slow release from these reservoirs is why Provysol fungicide has good residual activity and is recommended as the early-season foundational application in a sugarbeet grower’s fungicide program.

Lucento Fungicide

Powered by a novel pre-mix of active ingredients from FMC, new Lucento fungicide provides an exclusive combination of benefits for smart disease protection and high-yielding performance against the toughest diseases in sugarbeets, including powdery mildew and Cercospora leaf spot. With two modes of action (flutriafol and bixafen), Lucento offers long-lasting residual disease control and curative activity. It can also be used to reduce the burden on other important fungicides, like strobilurins, as part of a disease resistance management plan.
