Summers Manufacturing introduces the Supercoulter Samurai tillage tool, which was designed in response to farmer requests. It provides an ideal equipment option for those who enjoy the simplicity and benefits of true vertical tillage tools, but wish to move more dirt than the original Summers Supercoulter. It can be used in both spring and fall for residue management, light tillage and seedbed preparation.

The Supercoulter Samurai features a frame design similar to the original Summers Supercoulter, but it is equipped with Summers’ exclusive Osmundson Mfg. Co. patented Samurai disk blades, which are slightly concave with a notched sawtooth design for aggressively sizing today’s tough residue and more soil movement. The Samurai blades perform well in wet and hard soils, as well as in dry conditions, and are heat-treated for extended life.

Blades are spaced 10 inches apart on each gang, with the front and rear gangs offset for an effective 5-inch spacing, resulting in effective and consistent residue sizing. The front gang blades are positioned at a 3-degree angle, and the rear gang blades are positioned at a 5-degree angle, which thorough testing has shown to be the optimum configuration for achieving an ideal field finish in most conditions and soil types. Gang angles can be manually adjusted in the shop from 1 to 5 degrees, if desired, to accommodate more unique soil types, conditions and personal preferences.

Similar to the original Supercoulter, the simplistic design of the Supercoulter Samurai has a light enough footprint to help producers get in the field earlier in wet spring conditions. This advantage allows farmers to open the soil up earlier for drying, so they can plant sooner.

“I bought a Superoculter Samurai to work cornstalks in the fall and then incorporate fertilizer and prepare a seedbed in the spring,” says Matt Buttke, a farmer from Valley City, N.D. “I like the lightweight design that doesn’t plug up and requires lower horsepower to run than other tillage tools. Plus, it’s simple enough for any of my help to be able to use.”

Other standard features include a patented hydraulic hitch, the Super-Flex C-Shank gang-mounting system, and accurate depth control offering 0 to 5.5 inches of tillage depth. The Supercoulter Samurai is also available with a variety of finishing attachments, including the recommended harrow and rolling basket combo for superior seedbed preparation.

“We find that many of today’s farmers like the concept of true vertical tillage, but field conditions and personal preferences sometimes require something more aggressive, due to ruts, heavy residue, soil types or other factors,” says Summers director of innovation Bruce Johnson. “This trend led us to the development of the VRT Renegade variable rate tillage tool, which provides a great option for those producers looking for the flexibility to vary the aggressiveness of their tillage. However, some producers love the simplicity and lightweight footprint of the Supercoulter and just wanted something that is consistently a little more aggressive. We filled the gap by developing the Supercoulter Samurai, which is a light tillage and residue management tool that is straightforward to operate and cost effective, while providing the field finish that many of today’s farmers desire.”
