Western Sugar is starting its annual sugar extraction campaign on Friday.

Residents of Fort Morgan can expect to see over 200 trucks a day coming in on Riverview Avenue to drop off sugar beets at the facility.

During the campaign, the Fort Morgan facility will process over one million tons of sugar beets from all over Colorado. With approximately 17 percent sugar content per beet in this year's harvest, Western Sugar could produce around 340 million pounds of sugar.

With their Odor Management Plan in place, Western Sugar hopes to mitigate the odors that caused outcry from the public in the past. The OMP has a system of daily monitoring to ensure that odors coming from the factory remain within the state limits.

In the meantime, Western Sugar is also setting up a meeting next week to discuss their agreement for the city to process Western Sugar's wastewater, according to Brent Nation, Utilities Director for the city of Fort Morgan.
