A poll indicates building hope that the ag economy will improve under a new presidential administration.

The latest DTN/Progressive Farmer Agricultural Confidence Index jumped to a rating of 98, compared to a rating of 72 this past August. The survey of 500 U.S. farmers was compiled in early December. The poll is still slightly below 100, which is considered to be neither optimistic nor pessimistic.

The index has been below 100 since March 2014. Farmers rated current conditions at about 44, but future expectations were rated at 127.

DTN Editor-In-Chief Greg Horstmeier ties the upswing to the election of Donald Trump. He says that’s despite expectations of continued low commodity prices, high production costs and the threat of disputes with key U.S. trading partners.
