Japan’s government has approved the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade agreement.

The Japanese Prime Minister says he hopes the action persuades President-elect Donald Trump to reconsider the trade deal. Trump has publicly stated he will pull the United States out of the agreement during his first day in office. Trump has said he instead wants to negotiate fair, bilateral trade deals.

Japan and the European Union are meeting next week to discuss their own agreement. Japan is also in talks with 16 nations in Asia to draft a regional partnership.
