France has called for an end to the Trans-Atlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) talks.

The Guardian reports the French minister for foreign trade, tweeted that his government demanded negotiations should cease. French President Francois Hollande told French ambassadors the talks had stalled and he would withhold support from any agreement reached before the end of the Obama presidency.

However, a U.S. trade spokesman said talks had not stalled. The statement below was provided to Brownfield from US Trade Representative spokesman Matt McAlvanah.

“The European Commission and EU member state leaders have clearly reiterated their commitment to moving negotiations forward. We share that commitment and throughout the summer the United States has been focused on identifying pathways to an agreement that address the priorities of both sides. Ambassador Froman is looking forward to continuing that work when he meets with EU Trade Commissioner Malmstrom in the coming weeks.”

All 28 EU member states and the European parliament will have to ratify TTIP once talks have concluded.
