CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa—In this age where so many people want to know where their food comes from, one of the most common ingredients—sugar—may be a mystery to many.

“A lot of people don’t even know where their sugar comes from,” said Graig Cone, president and partner of Conveyor Engineering & Manufacturing in Cedar Rapids. “I bet 90 percent of it is sugarbeets.” Cone said the beets come from facilities in North Dakota and Minnesota, where his company has a major footprint.

Where Conveyor comes in is in the pressing and mixing of products and ingredients. First established in 1977 in nearby Shueyville, Conveyor specializes in screw conveyors, mixers and screw pressers of varying sizes. For the unfamiliar eye, a screw conveyor may appear to be the business end of a gigantic screwdriver.

“You’re dropping the product into one end and you’re conveying it into another,” said Cone as he demonstrated the process behind the product. “The only thing it’s doing is moving it from ‘A’ to ‘B’.”
