General Mills has become the second major food company to begin voluntarily labeling its products that contain GMO ingredients.

On the company’s website, chief operating officer Jeff Harmening explains that General Mills cannot label products for only one state without significantly driving up costs to consumers.

He says consumers across the U.S. will soon begin seeing words legislated by the state of Vermont, which has passed its own mandatory GMO labeling law.

Harmening says a national solution is needed to prevent multiple labeling requirements that would vary from state to state. He says General Mills’ is labeling products containing GMO ingredients not because it’s a health or food safety issue, but, rather, it’s about giving consumers the information they want.

Campbell Soup Company recently announced that company’s plans to voluntarily label products containing GMO ingredients.
