A GMO labeling bill, introduced by Senate Ag Committee chair Pat Roberts, is scheduled for committee markup this Thursday.

Roberts’ bill would create a voluntary biotech food label and preempt state labeling laws, including the one in Vermont set to take effect July 1. It mandates that the USDA set standards for voluntary labeling of biotech foods.

Food manufacturers, retailers and farm groups are applauding Roberts’ decision to move forward with the bill. But other groups, including Just Label It and the Environmental Working Group, are urging lawmakers to reject the measure. They say the only solution is mandatory disclosure of GMO ingredients.
