The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine is doing a study of genetically engineered crops.

Fred Gould, is a distinguished professor at North Carolina State, and a member of the committee leading the study. He says there have already been studies of GE crops, but this one is different.

“This is a broader study and it’s to address a lot of our experience—you know, genetically engineered crops have been out for 20 years now and to look at what the experience has actually been. So, we think of genetic engineering and it’s still pretty new, but it’s not brand new.”

Gould says there is much conflicting information on the benefits and risks of GE crops—and confusion among consumers—and this study is meant to be a benchmark.

“The idea of all of this is to be able to give people something people can trust. And, not everybody is going to trust this report but we tried as best we could to get input from very different perspectives.”

Although he could not confirm reports that the study will be released soon, it has been two years in the making.
