Sugarbeet season kicks into high gear today as Michigan Sugar opens its long-term storage facilities for area growers.

Paul Pfenninger of Michigan Sugar said the Bay City-based company expects a record crop this year. Preliminary tests are predicting 31.42 tons per acre and the season harvest should result in 31.7 tons of sugarbeets per acre. That will beat last year's record setting 29.6 tons per acre.

Michigan Sugar's four plants in Bay City, Caro, Croswell and Sebewaing annually produce 830 million pounds of sugar, primarily under the "Pioneer" and "Big Chief" brands, plus house brands for some customers.

Pfenninger reminds motorists a large number of sugarbeet trucks will be on the roads for the next few weeks, and drivers should use caution when encountering them.
