The White House is ordering three federal agencies to update their strategies for regulating biotech products.

A memorandum telling the USDA, EPA and FDA to “prevent unnecessary barriers to future innovation and competitiveness” says the agencies must improve “transparency, coordination, predictability and efficiency” while they continue “to protect health and the environment.”

The White House-established Biotechnology Working Group, made up of representatives from those three agencies, is charged with coming up with modernized plans for biotech regulation in one year.

The White House says, while it’s working, the current process is hindering small and medium-sized biotech companies.
