LONDON—Agricultural contractor Edward Plowright, who owns family-run J.P Plowright & Son of Barnstone, and his bride, Kayleigh, tied the knot at Waltham Church before Edward took the wheel of the Vervaet harvester—which weighs 35 tonnes unladen and has a maximum speed of 18mph—for their 20 minute journey to Stapleford Park.
Kayleigh said: “It was something we’d planned from the start but it was quite a shock for a few people! Edward spends a lot of time in the machine. It’s a big part of our lives and we thought it would be nice to include the heritage of who we are within our wedding day. We thought it was a good idea and it even followed the colour scheme as well!
“It was a lovely experience and quite a nice journey to our reception. It seemed to go so quickly but it really made our day all come together.”
The groom’s best man, Michael Hawker, provided a plastic step which enabled Kayleigh to preserve her modesty as she climbed aboard the vehicle used by the company which specialises in the drilling and harvesting of sugar beet in the Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire areas.
Edward and Kayleigh’s wedding was officiated by Canon Beverley Stark, Rector of the Ironstone Churches which include Waltham.
She said: “I’ve done hundreds of weddings over 23 years in Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire but I’ve never come across such an original and novel form of transportation! It was huge and, with its ribbons on, it certainly created a buzz around the village.”
Edward and Kayleigh, who have been together for about five years, were joined by around 70 guests at their reception. The couple, who were going to spend a few days in Gloucestershire and Norfolk on honeymoon, will live in Barnstone.
