Redshield Technology Inc., an Iowa-based technology company focusing exclusively on soil testing equipment, introduced its portable soil testing machine, SoilSens, at InfoAg 2013 in Springfield, Ill.

SoilSens, a patent-pending portable machine to test for nitrate nitrogen, fits easily into the back of a truck or utility vehicle, providing instant and reliable information about the nitrogen content in the soil.

SoilSens works by mixing a fresh soil sample with de-ionized water. The water flows through the sample, picking up nitrate ions from the soil along the way. A sensor measures the number of nitrate ions present. The entire process takes less than five minutes.

“SoilSens is a tool that provides growers with additional information to help them make informed decisions about what’s best for their fields,” said Stacey Schildroth, owner of Redshield Technology. “Aside from the weather, the most important determinant to a healthy crop is getting the nitrogen application right. That’s where SoilSens comes in.”

Additional highlights include a built-in GPS to record the soil sample location along with the soil nitrate level and a file management system to track the data and export it to farm management programs.
