Despite the lack of activity in the fields, April was a pretty good month for tractor sales in the U.S.
The Association of Equipment Manufacturers says 22,144 farm tractors were sold in the month, up 6.4 percent compared to April of 2012. Two-wheel-drive tractor sales were 6.5 percent higher at 21,504, while four-wheel-drive sales were 3.6 percent higher at 640.
The biggest percentage increase in sale was 100-plus horsepower two-wheel-drives up 35.9 percent from a year ago at 3,753 units. 40-to-100 horsepower sales were down 3.7 percent. The largest unit sales were those under 40 horse, 12,593 machines.
Year-to-date, total tractor sales are 9.3 percent ahead of last year, two-wheel-drive sales are 9 percent higher and four-wheel-drive sales are up 18.1 percent.
Self-propelled combine sales were up 58.6 percent in April with 920 units. Year-to-date sales are running 57.2 percent above a year ago.
