Spring planting is quickly approaching.
Purdue Extension agronomist Bob Nielsen says even though last year was an extremely early planting season - farmers should remember 2011 was one of the latest planting seasons on record.
"Every year is obviously different," he says. "We have to pretty much take what Mother Nature gives us in terms of field conditions and weather."
For that reason, Nielsen tells Brownfield as we get closer to planting it is wise for farmers to be ready to go when Mother Nature allows.
"But I wouldn't get too excited," he says. "And I certainly wouldn't push or rush it just to get out early. Planting date itself is not a guarantee of high yield or low yield for that matter."
The decision to plant, he says, should be made on the condition of the field.
