Drought is expected to take a $50 million toll on potato growers on Prince Edward Island, Can.

Potato officials say the 2001 harvest is off 50 percent. One grower in Kings County said there were fields he didn't bother to harvest.

Federal Agriculture Minister Lyle Vanclief says the safety nets are in place to help growers fare out a bad year.

Contract growers are coming up short on raw product, causing processors to scramble for additional potatoes.

Growers with open potatoes face a better future. Some speculate that the economics of supply and demand could double prices. Only 30-40 percent of the growers has crop insurance.
