Australian potato growers won a pay increase from McCain Foods after a long battle for better contracts.

After weeks of protests, including a one-day blockade of a Tasmanian processing plant, McCain agreed to a A$22 a ton increase for the coming season and another A$9 a ton the following year.

Negotiators from Tasmania, Victoria and South Australia announced the deal after a six-hour meeting with McCain.

Growers, however, said the battle is not yet over. They are now turning their attention to Simplot, seeking the same deal.

The increase, from A$200 a ton, was the first for growers in 10 years.
