Announcement was made today that a company called Genetic ID Inc., has developed a cost-effective test that could help save hundreds of millions of dollars.

The test screens for specific unapproved varieties of GMOs. They promise to protect U.S. exporters from risks of refused shipments and legal penalties.

Japan has specified a zero tolerance for GMO foods. The regulation will be enforced April 1, 2001.

Genetic ID Inc. can develop variety-specific tests for any GMOs unapproved by any trading partner.

"With each nation creating its own list of unapproved varieties and labeling thresholds for GMOs, exporters face unprecedented challenges," Bill Witherspoon, CEO, said.

Genetic ID, in cooperation with LawLabs of the UK, also developed Cert ID, the world's first non-GMO certification program which provides further protection with third-party assurance of non-GMO production.
