Two Prince Edward Island growers have been blacklisted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration because traces of acephate were found in shipments into New York in 1998.
New York has zero tolerance for acephate though it is approved by the U.S.
The PEI potato board recommended a regulatory harmonization at a recent Canada-US meeting examining the potato industry.
Six growers are being blamed for fish kills. Before next spring, a code of practice for soil and water conservation will be recommended by an Action Committee. Buffer zones will be established this year. In addition, an environmental plant will be made for every farm in the province. The Committee has set 22 recommendations.
