Ag Day essay contest winners announced

The Agriculture Council of America announced the 2013 National Ag Day written essay and video essay contest winners.

Whitney Bowman, a 12th-grader at Stonewall Jackson High in Quicksburg, Va., won the written essay category and Lebo Molefe, a 10th-grader at Metea Valley High in Aurora, Ill., won the video essay contest.

Students were asked to submit an original written essay of 450 words or an original two-minute video essay about the importance of agriculture in the U.S. The theme this year was “American Agriculture:  Nourishing Opportunities.

In Bowman’s essay she says:

“…Through the centuries, American agriculture has grown and overcome the challenges in its way. Even more opportunities for growth lie ahead. As American agriculture addresses issues such as environmental stewardship, the growing population, and a lack of consumer understanding, its roots will sink deep, its branches grow upward, and its trunk remain firm.”

Annette Degnan, marketing communications director for CHS Inc. and ACA board member says both Bowman and Molefe created compelling messages about the importance of American agriculture to our global economy.
