GMO-labeling effort advances in Washington State

A move to require GMO-labeling of foods in Washington State has taken a step forward.

Petitions with 350,000 signatures have been submitted to the state calling for the labeling of foods which contain genetically modified ingredients. 241,153 signatures of registered voters are needed to move the initiative known as “I-522” forward.

Once enough signatures are verified, state legislators have three options: they can pass a labeling law, put the question on the ballot or send the petition and a legislative alternative to the voters in November.

California voters rejected a GMO-labeling initiative last November.
