Johanns not convinced deeper ag cuts are imminent

When the House and Senate Agriculture Committees restart the farm bill process this year, there is speculation they’ll be pressured to make even deeper cuts than the 25 to 30 billion dollars in savings they proposed in 2012.

But Nebraska Senator Mike Johanns doesn’t think that will be the case.

“I’m optimistic that our numbers are going to stay pretty true,” Johanns says. “I still think that a fair target is going to be in the 25-billion dollar range.”

Johanns doesn’t see the need to start from scratch on the new farm bill.  He says the farm bill passed by the Senate provides a good template.

“The Senate bill was a good bill,” he says. “I will be more than happy to do everything I can to try to get that same version to the floor and get it passed.”
