SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb.—Western Sugar is facing more than $25,000 in fines coming from the United States Department of Labor.

According to the Department of Labor, in a January incident the company failed to protect their employees.

These citations go back to an incident on Jan. 6 where a contract worker suffered hot liquid burns when he was cleaning an evaporator unit at the Scottsbluff Western Sugar factory.

Reports by the U.S. Department of Labor say Western Sugar officials failed to identify and evaluate all hazards. Nor did they make sure the spaces were safe to enter.

Western Sugar is not the only company facing serious citations due to the January incident.

Interstate Industrial Services faces about $10,000 in fines, and Rocky Mountain Specialty Services faces nearly $23,000. These fines are for alleged violations.

Western Sugar has until June 5 to fix the problems.
