A former anti-GMO activist says his opposition to GMOs was a “huge mistake."

British environmental writer Mark Lynas made headlines worldwide in 2013 when he publicly reversed his stance on biotechnology and genetically modified organisms. Lynas, an advocate for action on climate change, says he realized he could no longer deny the science behind GMOs.

“If I was going to defend the scientific consensus on climate change, I couldn’t then say, ‘you’ve got to listen the 97 percent of the experts who show that climate change is happening, but you’ve got to ignore an equivalent scientific consensus on the safety of GMOs.’ Isn’t that an inconsistent position?”

Lynas now travels the world touting the potential of GMOs in reducing poverty and hunger.

“You know, you feel if you’ve made a mistake and you’ve caused some damage in the world, you have to—if you’re going to live with yourself—you have to at least make an attempt to put it right.”

Lynas recently spoke at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln.
