The CEO of a China-based seed company says this has been “a watershed year” for China’s position on biotechnology.

Bill Niebur with Origin Agritech says the Chinese government has made several announcements in recent months indicating it plans to accelerate its adoption of biotechnology.

“So we believe that, by the end of this decade, we will have biotech moving into that next section,” Niebur says. “It’s currently in fiber crops. We see it moving into industrial food crops such as corn and soybeans. And then farther down the road, we imagine it will move into food crops, such as wheat and rice.”

Niebur is former executive with DuPont Pioneer. He’s based in Des Moines, where Origin Agritech recently opened its first office outside of China.
