House Speaker Paul Ryan says the proposed Trans Pacific Partnership Trade agreement won’t become law this year. At his weekly press conference this week, Ryan says TPP would fail in the current Congress.

“We don’t have the votes right now. So it’s not something that I’m thinking about because I know the votes on this issue pretty well from doing TPA and we don’t have the votes. And quite frankly I think they’ve got to fix it and they haven’t done that.” says Ryan.

The agreement is a key initiative of the Obama White House but has been a hot topic during the presidential campaign. Both candidates have said they are opposed to the agreement, and Ryan says the issue won’t even be brought before Congress this year.

“You bring it up it’s going to go down. I don’t think we should bring up a bill that’s going to go down.” says Ryan.

President Obama has said the trade agreement will be passed before he leaves office in January.
