The Weed Science Society of America says Palmer amaranth is the most troublesome weed in the U.S.

Scientists, extension agents and practitioners from across the country participated in a survey compiling lists for the most common and problematic weeds.

Weed Science Society policy director Dr. Lee Van Wychen says the primary reason Palmer topped the list of troublesome weeds is because of herbicide resistance.

“There’s probably trillions and trillions of individuals within that population across the landscape at any one time.  (Palmer amaranth) just happened to have the genetic capabilities to tolerate some of our most widely-used herbicides in row-crop production.”

He tells Brownfield the yield-robber has continued to spread north and is now the fourth most common weed in the U.S.
