The Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) remains hopeful that Congress will pass uniform national GMO labeling legislation before Vermont’s law goes into effect July 1.

GMA public affairs official Michael Gruber says stakeholders continue to voice their concerns to lawmakers.

“From farmers to distributors (and) food manufacturers big and small-explaining how the Vermont law really is disruptive (and) expensive. (the law) causes consumers to pay a higher price (and) disrupts how farmers do their business to support their family farms.”

He says the Grocery Manufacturers support a reasonable compromise.

“It (needs to) allow us to have a national standard; a national definition that does not stigmatize the technology (of GMO’s) or force us to put on-package labels that are intended to mislead consumers into believing there’s something wrong with the product.”

Gruber says GMA is working with Democrats and Republicans to find language that can garner enough support to get the 60 votes necessary to pass in the Senate.
